How this site collects, stores and protects your information, written in plain English.
Your privacy matters, and this policy explains in plain language what happens to your data when you use this website. We wrote it to be readable rather than clever, so you should not need a lawyer to understand any part of it. If something is unclear, please contact us and we will improve the wording.
This site is operated by the Rice Purity Test team, an independent group of builders who maintain this website. We are not affiliated with Rice University, and we do not represent any campus organisation. We are the party responsible for how your data is handled when you visit or interact with this site.
We collect the minimum amount of information needed to run the site well. When you take the test without an account, your answers stay on your device and are not sent to us. When you save a score to your account, we store the numeric score, the date, and the account it belongs to. When you sign up for an account, we store your email address and an encrypted password hash. When you contact us, we store the message you sent along with the name and email you provided. When you visit the site, our analytics tools receive anonymous information about your device, browser, country, and the pages you viewed, along with basic technical logs that help us keep the site online.
We do not collect your real name unless you type it into a form. We do not collect precise location data. We do not collect government identifiers or payment details. We do not build advertising profiles about you. We do not sell your data. We do not share your answers to individual test questions with anyone under any circumstance.
We use the data we collect to serve you the page you requested, remember you are logged in, save your scores so you can look at them later, respond to your messages, and understand how the site is being used so we can improve it. That is the full list. We do not repurpose your data for anything beyond running and improving this website.
We use a small number of cookies to keep the site working. A session cookie keeps you signed in, a preference cookie remembers your theme choice, and analytics cookies count anonymous visits. We do not use advertising cookies. You can clear cookies at any time from your browser settings. Clearing them will sign you out and reset your preferences.
We use a privacy conscious analytics setup to understand which pages are working, which are slow, and which are broken. The analytics service receives an anonymised version of your visit and does not associate it with a personal identity. If you use a browser feature or extension that blocks analytics, the site will still work normally.
We rely on a small number of trusted service providers to keep the site running. These include our hosting provider, our database provider, and our email delivery provider. Each of them only sees the data they need to do their job. We choose providers with strong privacy practices, and we review those choices periodically. We do not embed third party widgets that would track you across the web.
Account data is kept for as long as your account exists. Scores you save are kept until you delete them or delete your account. Contact form messages are kept for up to two years so we can reference past conversations. Analytics data is aggregated and kept for a rolling period defined by our analytics provider. Backups of the database are retained for a short window and then destroyed on a schedule.
You can view the data associated with your account from your profile page. You can update your email or password from the same place. You can permanently delete your account and all associated scores at any time. If you live in a region with data protection laws that grant you additional rights, such as the right to a full data export or the right to object to specific processing, contact us and we will honour those rights promptly.
This site is not intended for children under the age of thirteen, and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone in that age range. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided data to us, please contact us and we will remove it.
We follow modern security practices. Passwords are hashed and never stored in plain text. Traffic between your browser and the site is encrypted in transit. Access to internal admin tools requires authentication and is limited to a small number of trusted people. No system is perfect, but we treat security seriously and respond quickly to reports of vulnerabilities.
Our infrastructure providers may store or process data in regions outside your country of residence. Where that happens, we rely on the standard safeguards those providers offer, including contractual protections that maintain the same privacy standards regardless of physical location.
If we make meaningful changes to this policy, we will update the date at the top of the page and, when appropriate, notify account holders by email. Small clarifications and typo fixes will be made without a notice.
If you have any question about how your data is handled, or if you want to exercise one of your rights, please reach out through the contact page. We treat privacy questions with priority and reply within one business day whenever possible.
