How this site collects, stores and protects your information, written in plain English. We believe a privacy policy should be readable by the people it describes, so we have avoided legal language wherever we can. If anything here is unclear, contact us and we will explain it in ordinary words.
When you take the Rice Purity Test, we store your final score anonymously. That means the number is saved with no name, no email address, and nothing else attached that identifies you, and it is used only to show site statistics such as the average score and the distribution of results. Those statistics are part of what makes the site interesting, and they only work if they are honest, so scores are stored exactly as they are submitted.
If you create an account, we store the details you give us, such as your email address and a display name, so that you can sign in and use account features. Your password is stored in encrypted form by our authentication provider and we never see it or store it in plain text. If you send us a message through the contact form, we keep your name, your email address, and your message, in the site dashboard, so that we can read it and reply. If you subscribe to the newsletter, we store your email address so we can send the newsletter, and nothing else.
The test questions run in your browser. We do not publish, sell, or share anyone's individual answers, and there is no page on this site where one visitor can see what another visitor answered. Your results page is yours. If you choose to share your score card with friends or post it anywhere, that sharing is your decision and under your control, not ours.
We use the information described above for a short list of ordinary purposes: running the test and showing your result, calculating anonymous site statistics, letting account holders sign in and use their features, reading and answering messages, sending the newsletter to people who asked for it, keeping the site secure, and fixing problems when something breaks. We do not use your information for anything outside that list, and we do not build profiles of individual visitors for advertising.
We use a small number of cookies and similar browser storage. Some are essential, for example to keep you signed in if you have an account and to remember whether you prefer the light or dark theme. Some help us count visits and understand which pages are popular, in aggregate. We do not use cookies to follow you around the internet, and we do not run third-party advertising trackers. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time; the test itself will still work, although some preferences may not be remembered between visits.
We may use privacy-respecting analytics to count visits, see which pages are read most, and notice when a page is broken or unusually slow. Analytics information is aggregated. It tells us that a page was visited a number of times, not who visited it, and we use it to decide what to improve. Where an analytics tool sets identifiers, they are covered by the cookie section above.
We do not sell personal information, and we never have. We share information only in three narrow situations. First, with the service providers who keep the site running, such as hosting and database providers, and only to the extent they need the information to provide that service. Second, where the law requires it, for example under a valid court order. Third, with your clear permission, which in practice means when you ask us to do something that involves sharing, such as forwarding a message. Outside those situations, your information stays with us.
Anonymous scores are kept indefinitely, because the statistics they feed are part of the site's history and they cannot be traced back to anyone. Account information is kept while your account exists. Contact messages are kept while they are useful for answering you and for a reasonable period afterwards, in case the conversation continues. Newsletter subscriptions last until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove your address. If you ask us to delete your account and its information, we will do so, and the deletion section below explains how to ask.
We use encrypted connections, reputable hosting and database providers, and access controls that limit who and what can reach stored information. No website can promise perfect security, and we will not pretend otherwise, but we take the ordinary professional steps that a well-run site should take, and we review them as the site grows. If we ever become aware of a breach affecting personal information, we will act on it and inform affected people where the law requires.
This site is a general-audience site about a light-hearted test. The test itself asks about life experiences in plain checklist form and requires no personal information from anyone, of any age. Accounts and newsletters are intended for adults and older students. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will remove it.
If you have an account, you can ask us at any time to show you the personal information we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete your account and its information entirely. Newsletter subscribers can unsubscribe from any email or by contacting us. Everyone can control cookies through their browser. To make any of these requests, use the contact page and tell us what you need. We may ask you to confirm that the account or address is yours, which protects you as much as it protects us, and we will act on proper requests without unnecessary delay.
If we change this policy in an important way, we will update this page and note the new date at the top. Small wording corrections will simply appear here. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated policy, so it is worth skimming this page now and then if privacy matters to you, and we think it should.
